Am I Really Writing About This Stuff Again?
Posted on November 20th, 2009 No commentsI just read a blog post over at the newly revamped Drake Magazine website by noted shoelace hater, Tom Bie. Yes, he really does hate shoelaces. But that’s not what this is about. This is about a well written piece Tom wrote dubbed, Print is Dead .
As the 15th Drake makes its way across the country this fall, I find myself intrigued by all the recent chatter on the downfall of magazines, most of it coming from new-media pundits shouting their favorite proclamation: “Print is dead!”
Tom goes on to illustrate why he feels that maybe, just maybe, print media hasn’t been kicked under the rug just yet.
If we’re talking about technology like Amazon’s Kindle, which allows readers to look up words, change font size, and buy almost any book they can think of in a matter of minutes, then I’ll concede the point: it provides new, innovative, creative ideas. But still, does this girl really look comfortable? I firmly believe in embracing new technology—a belief I back up by constantly supporting and promoting flyfishing filmmakers and on-line innovators. Everything evolves, and magazines should be no different. (Is it ironic that I’m using my blog to make a post about the strength of print?) Regardless of the platform, magazines need to attract and retain readers. And the only way to do that is to produce something worth looking at. It all comes down to quality, and the user-experience. Brian O’Keefe and Todd Moen have made Catch magazine popular by producing a unique, high-quality, creative on-line experience. But I can’t say the same for the majority of blogs out there, or many other forms of media that are competing with print, including cable television. I think it is very ironic that Tom is using his blog to make the case for print, but what is more ironic is the fact that so many of the fly fishing world’s new e-zines are all trying to look like a print magazine.
This same topic came up between myself and a friend a few weeks ago, and my friend asked the obvious-
I don’t understand why websites try to duplicate magazines. The web has infinite possibilities, while a magazine is what it is.
I don’t either, do you?

Fly Shops Gone Wild!
Posted on November 20th, 2009 No comments“Just a reminder that the fishing behind my lodge & retail shop is for “Members Only”. It’s private and monitored 24/7. While I do not own the water, I do own the rocks beneath. This is New York State Law and it will be enforced if you trespass. Also, if I or another property manager that I designate asks to see your fishing license and you refuse to show it,that carries another charge. It’s the same as the Douglaston Salmon Run (DSR) in the lower part of the river. Let’s respect private property and if you would like to know how to become a “Member”, please contact me. Thank you. As soon as I am able to I’ll write a story on how to become a “Member” other than lodging or guiding with me. Thank you and Fish ON!! Let’s have a great 2009 Salmon & Steelhead Season.”
“When you call my shop number or cell phone, please be ready to book and understand that I can’t be bothered right now with questions like, “Is it worth it for me to come to Pulaski NY”, or “How many fish are in the river?”

Just Sayin’
Posted on November 20th, 2009 No commentsRan across another guy on the internet going all “whooh and ahhh” about his first experience fly fishing with a two handed rod. I suppose if I had just dropped a few hundred on a new rod, I’d be telling myself all that BS, too.
Fish how you want says the blind man to the boy, I’m not watching you anyway.
I love to swing flies. I love to use a few of the basic spey casts when a backcast just isn’t an option. But I cringe at the idea of restricting myself to frothing the meniscus, and only frothing the meniscus. I want to be versatile. I don’t ever want my gear to stop me from fishing a run the way I want to fish it. Who knows what that way may be, I won’t know till I get there. But I ain’t going there to cast, I’m going there to fish. just sayin’.

Gear Review: HMH’s Tube Fly Tool
Posted on November 20th, 2009 No comments
I haven't named this one yet, but I was stoked to finally tie something I've had pictured in my head for forever now
Well I finally got a chance to play with a couple new toys yesterday. Singlebarbed’s 6th Finger Scissor , and HMH’s Starter Tube Fly Tool .
To tie tubes in the past, I’ve either used an allen wrench, or just put the tube directly in my vise’s jaws. The allen wrench works okay, but I’ve never been able to spin/stack deer hair without the wrench slipping a little in the jaws from all the torque on the tube. Putting the tube right in my vise’s jaws worked alright, too, but I ran into the same problem when spinning hair, and would sometimes crush plastic tubes.
I ordered the HMH Tube Fly Tool from J Stockard Fly Fishing . They aren’t one of my sponsors or anything, I just like doing business with them. Plus, for my recent birthday, I got a $50 gift certificate to use there from my mother-in-law.
Like all poor bastards savvy shoppers, I spent a good deal of time going through the tying materials on the J Stockard site, trying to figure out a way to squeeze everything I’ve been meaning to add to my materials arsenal onto that $50 credit. The list of stuff that I first filled my shopping cart with looked drastically different than my final order. My first instinct was to get as many hooks as I could. Then I remembered that I have been wanting to play with rattles on my carp flies, and Stalcup’s Damsel Body on my panfish flies. Then I added a bunch of synthetic hair before I ran into the HMH tube fly coneheads and remembered that this is the tying season that I go to tubes for all my streamer patterns instead of regular hooks. And before you knew it, I was removing just enough stuff that I could add the Tube Fly Tool pictured above to my cart without going over my $50 limit.
Now before I give a glowing review on this product, I’ve got to admit that after a past experience with HMH while I was writing the DayTripper blog, I really didn’t want to. I won’t go into details or anything, but I only point it out because I had sworn to myself that I’d never give a positive review for another HMH product again after what happened behind the scenes.
Yet here I am, about to tell you that the HMH Tube Fly Tool is rock solid in my vise- a Danvise by the way, so [tongue in cheek] I would guess that all of you who tie on a Renzetti/ Dynaking/ HMH/ etc., should have no problems with this tool [/tongue in cheek] .
After tying a few typical tube patterns like the one pictured waaay up at the top of this post, and being happy with the tool’s holding power, I decided it was time to pull the deer hair out.
I went through my mental rolodex of patterns I’ve been wanting to convert to a tube, and sitting way up on top was the Crayfish Muddler, a crayfish pattern developed by Hatches Magazine Editor, Will Mullis.
As I put more and more force on the thread, the hair spun, and the tool stayed put in my vise’s jaws. But more importantly, the metal rod that holds the tube didn’t bend, the tube didn’t spin, and I was happy enough with the results that I broke my blood oath to never endorse another HMH product again.
So, if you want to enter the world of tubes, I’d say this tool is well worth the $25.
Singlebarbed’s 6th Finger Scissors worked well, too. Though I have to admit to setting them on my desk a few times between snips out of pure habit.

Spring and Fall Fishing and Mexico Update
Posted on October 16th, 2009 No comments
[Editor: this article first appeared on www.ronsfishingblog and may only be used by permission of Ron Speed ] Two Great Times of Year For USA Fishing
There are two great times of the year to bass fish here in the USA. One time is the spring of the year when the bass move into shallow water to spawn. During this time, the bass will hit most any kind of lure either to feed or to protect the nest and eggs or fry. The one negative for fishermen this time of the year is the weather, mainly the wind that comes in the spring. It can be somewhat dangerous if you venture into open water with waves too big for your boat. Also since this is a drastic change in seasons, most states still have cold fronts that seem to come every weekend like clock work. The bass will yo-yo from shallow to deep water until the water maintains a constant temperature above 60 degrees. The other time of the year that is great to bass fish is late fall. You don’t have the high wind to contend with and the temperatures are usually great. Also there are not too many boats on the lakes this time of the year as most fishermen are dove hunting, taking kids to school, or getting ready for deer season. Most rods and reels have been stored and won’t be used again until next spring.
But the bass are moving from deep summer patterns into the creeks to feed up for the long cold winter. These bass also will bite almost anything that moves. Just find some clear water creeks, go to the mouth of these creeks, and fish a spinner bait on the major point or just inside the creek on the first secondary point. If you don’t hit gold on these points then get into the creek bed itself and start fishing the sides of the creek also using a locator bait like the spinner. Once you locate the bass then you can switch baits to better suit the situation. It’s a great time to bass fish!
Mexico Update
WHAT HAVE YOU HEARD LATELY ABOUT PROBLEMS IN MEXICO?
I can tell you that you haven’t heard anything about violence or swine flu or anything negative. The reason is that nothing is going on now just like nothing was going on last March as I reported to all of you. The USA state department did the country of Mexico a great injustice when they issued a travel advisory for the whole country of Mexico. Then three weeks later they amended the advisory to say WE DIDN’T MEAN THE WHOLE COUNTRY OF MEXICO. That’s not what they said in the beginning and it absolutely crushed the economy of Mexico. The only violence in March was in the city of Juarez across from El Paso, Texas. The drug gangs were killing off each other in a turf war and 99.999 % of all those killed were drug guys and police fighting these drug guys. No Americans were killed and my info says no innocent people were killed. The soldiers moved in and in a short time the war was over. However, our media did not report a follow up saying everything was calm. That just doesn’t make good headlines.I sent my oldest son, Johnny, to Lake Salto last March knowing 100% that it was safe but it was hard to convince others as we have become used to the idea that our media and our government always tell us the truth. I do say that most of the time I too believe them but this time they all got it wrong.
What about the swine flu outbreak in Mexico? I visited Mazatlan in August and I asked Carlos how many cases of swine flu were reported in Mazatlan. To my surprise, he said “None.” Okay, how many cases of swine flu have been reported in the state of Sinaloa? He replied, “One (1) case and no deaths.” I told him we had had hundreds of cases of swine flu in Dallas alone and joked that he should not come to Dallas any time soon.
Last week my two grandsons who attend Corsicana schools both were hit with swine flu. Mark, the youngest (10 yrs) got sick on Sunday. He got a shot of Tamiflu on Monday and was feeling great by Thursday but couldn’t go back to school until today due to school rules. My oldest grandson, Matt (17) got sick with the swine flu on Monday but never told anyone so he could keep playing football. He is the starting middle linebacker on defense and was captain of the team and he didn’t want to miss practice or the game. The team had already lost several players the week before due to swine flu and Matt just refused to miss so he just kept quiet.
Now with all this info to set the record straight what do you think about all the hoopla we were fed last March and April by the media and the State Department? Time sure has a way of letting us see things much more clearly as the truth will finally come out given enough time.
Next up will be some pretty exciting stuff about our camp on El Salto. Would you believe a jacuzzi, massage room, tackle store, a huge new outdoor bar, TV in every room, and a new fleet of boats?! Stay tuned for these exciting news flashes.
HAVE FUN WITH YOUR FISHING & WEAR THAT LIFE JACKET!

A Secret Bass Fishing Lake in Mexico (Part 1)
Posted on July 21st, 2009 No comments
[Editor: this article first appeared on www.ronsfishingblog and may only be used by permission of Ron Speed ] Today we will talk about an old lake in Mexico in the state of Durango named Palmito . This old lake was built during World War II and stocked with Northern black bass.
The story starts with a group of clients and myself going to Lake Guerrero maybe in 1976. We were still catching lots of bass at Guerrero but they were mostly small. I had made many checkout trips to other lakes in Mexico but found none that were suitable for my operations. Upon returning from Guerrero in a charter plane from Rio Airways we stopped in McAllen to clear US customs.
Everyone went to the men’s room and while I was in a stall I overheard 2 men say that they hoped Ron Speed never finds Palmito. These 2 guys were from Dallas and were in the printing business. They had been pulling their boats to this mystery lake for many years and they didn’t want me to bring hundreds of American fisherman to their secret lake.
Upon returning to Dallas and my home in Forney, Texas I began the search for this mystery lake. I had no idea where it was or anything about it. I made many calls all over the US & Mexico and nobody had ever heard of it. I can’t remember how I finally found it but in less than 2 weeks I was dragging a boat and motor from Guerrero west to the city of Torreon. I found out in Torreon that we still had 5 more hours of traveling west to reach the lake. The last 14 miles were non-paved and the roughest road in Mexico.
Upon arriving in the small village of Palmito we discovered 2 flats from the rough road. I visited the mayor’s office and he gave me a history of the lake and advised me to contact a local merchant named Javier Boca Negro. Javier was an avid bass fisherman but he sold groceries to the local commercial fishermen on credit so he had lots of stroke in that small village.
I went to meet Javier and liked him from the very start as he was quite a character and prankster. He took me over to the only hotel in the village and helped me and my driver (Chagueoy) get rooms. I believe the cost was $3.00 per night and they were over-priced. I had never seen that bad of a room in my life. The sheets were almost black and sewer water was running through one corner of the room. I still get the shivers from thinking about that room.
Javier made arrangments for one of the best fishermen to go with me the next morning early. I went to bed early but couldn’t sleep as I kept thinking about the dirty sheets. Maybe around 11 pm I finally dropped off to sleep only to be awakened by loud pistol shots outside my room. I jumped up and looked out the window to see a very drunk mayor staggering down main street and shooting at the moon. If you saw the movie Tombstone you can recall Curlie Bill Brochas getting high on opium and shooting at the moon. Well this was almost the same to a tee except nobody tried to get him out of the street. I thought WHAT HAVE I GOTTEN INTO THIS TIME?!
I got very little sleep that night due to the dirty room, drunk mayor, and the excitement of fishing a new lake. The next morning Javier came and took me for coffee at his store and I got to meet my guide for the day. His name was Baltarsar Bustamente. He was and still is–if living–the best bass fisherman I ever met.
It was May and the bass were right up on the bank spawning and easy to catch. The local fishermen did not use nets or outboard motors. Most used a coke can for a reel and they caught their bass by casting their baits by hand. Baltasar did have an old reel that I feel was given him by the American printers from Dallas.
That first day we caught over 200 bass with many fish in the 4 to 6 pound range. It was fantastic and I was on cloud 9 as I had found that mystery lake we needed so badly for our clients. I fished 2 more days and caught over 200 bass each day up to 7 pounds. Now remember… these were the days before Florida bass and a 7 pound bass was considered a real trophy.
My driver and I left with a really good feeling about this secret lake that was not to be a secret very much longer (to be continued next week) ….
I wish you good fishing and please wear that lifejacket!

Fat Fish and the (somewhat) Skinny Fisherman
Posted on June 18th, 2009 No commentsEl Salto Fishing Report
This lake just keeps on producing great numbers of large bass. Every single group the past 3 weeks has had some of the best big bass fishing I have seen at this lake in over 5 years. There have been more numbers of 7 to 13 pound bass than I ever remember even in the first years. How many of you have ever caught three 10 lb bass in one day of fishing? Well, that is exactly what Tom Worthy did on June 11, fishing with Armando Sr. They have been using a citrus-color deep-diving crank bait. What happens this time of the year when the lake gets low from the crop irrigation is that the big bass bunch up along the river or on underwater islands.
Our guides have learned through the years just where these hot spots are located and when the fish inhabit these deep water humps it is “lights out.” Fantastic!!!!!
Bob Griggs from Texas just got back with his group yesterday and called this morning to book the whole camp for next June.
Personal Story
Twenty five years ago I was traveling the country running bird dogs in field trials and having a ball. My good friend in Los Mochis, Roberto Balderrama, called me and invited me back into the fishing business once again. After a little arm twisting, I agreed to go back to see him and fish Lake Comedero.
Well, it’s been quite a 25-year ride and I have enjoyed every minute of it and plan to spend more time at the lodges next season. However, I do plan to try and run a few field trials as I just never got to do enough of it 25 years ago.
I bought some nice Tennessee walking horses and raised some good bird dogs and am looking to enjoy this hobby when time permits. I went to a trial in Mexia, Texas back in March right after buying the horses. I was really excited to see a lot of my old friends after 25 years.
I saddled up my fine new horse and went to get mounted and I couldn’t get on the horse. I have ridden horses on and off all my life and never had a problem.
I soon realized I was a lot older and of course had gained a lot of weight. I was so embarrassed to have to get up on a 5 gallon bucket to mount my horse.
On my way back home I decided if I wanted to start back with my favorite hobby (trialing) I had to make some changes in my life. I am now 70 years old and if I don’t do it now I probably never will trial again. I made up my mind to lose some weight and gain some upper body strength so as to pull myself up in the saddle.
This was in the last week of March and I weighed 207 lbs with a pot gut and a tight 40 inches in the waist. Today, the 17th day of June, I weigh 176 lbs and I put on an old pair of 36 inch blue jeans. I had a problem with blood sugar, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc. when I started losing weight. Today I no longer have any problem with any of those illness.
I feel 25 years younger and have endless energy. How did I do it??? I didn’t do any of those diets you see on the TV. I know basically diets as such just don’t work. You lose the weight and then go back to eating normal and you wind up gaining it all back.
Here is what I did…. I picked out the foods I liked the most that didn’t have carbs. One of my favorite meals is fish, so I based my NEW LIFE HABIT on fish. All kinds of fish, but my main staple is ceviche, which I learned to make in Mexico. I just love it and it loves me. I also bought several cans of light Tuna, mixing Mayo and dill pickles with it. I bought several cans of sardines which I love with a little Tabasco. Once a week Virginia & I will grill 4 tilapia fillets on the outdoor grill. I brush them with olive oil and at the end brush on a little butter.
Every Sunday after church we eat fried catfish. Now, this is not too good if you are trying to lose weight… but I refuse to totally cut out all my favorite foods so I cheat one meal a week.
I also love salads if the lettuce is fresh and crispy but for me the biggest problem was the dressings to put on the salad. I couldn’t find any of the store-bought dressings I liked except the ones that were fattening. Therefore I made my own. I mixed a half cup of olive oil, 2 packets of Splenda, 1 tablespoon of garlic power and 3 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar. MAN WHAT A GREAT DRESSING!!!!!!!!!
I hope to goodness I haven’t bored you with this personal story, but maybe some of you may wish to lose some weight and eating fish is a good way to do it.
The recipe for the ceviche is: 6 filets of tilapia from Walmart cut in small 1 inch cubes, 30 limes juiced in an electric juicer, 4 cloves of garlic chopped fine, one red, one yellow, and one orange bell pepper cut into 1 in. cubes, 1/2 cup of cilantro chopped very fine, 1/2 cup of olive oil, 6 green-top onions chopped into small pieces, and 4 firm Roma tomatoes cut into small pieces. Be sure and remove all the insides from the tomatoes as you want everything to be very firm and crisp.
I marinate the fish in the lime juice over night and then add all the other ingredients the next morning. Let it set in the fridge for maybe 4 hours and then get you a big bowl, add a few hits of Tabasco, a few hits of fresh ground black pepper and just pig out. I promise you won’t gain a pound eating ceviche and it’s good.
Some people think you are eating raw fish but it is not raw as the lime juice cooks it very well. It’s not raw even though it is not cooked using fire.
GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR FISHING AND PLEASE WEAR THE LIFEJACKET

My First Chukar
Posted on April 20th, 2009 No commentsSince I don’t have enough hobbies to take up all my time I’ve recently started chukar hunting. I’ve been out a few times with my Friend Dave and his dog Max. The first time I went we hiked all the way to the top of West Mountain and back down again and got into a few birds, but I didn’t have a good shot. I soon realized that chukar hunting isn’t a lazy mans sport.
After my first hunt I was hungry to get out again and try and get the little birds that made me sweat so much looking for them. I read on someone’s blog that the first time you go chukar hunting it’s for fun and from that point on you go for revenge…I found this to be a perfect statement. I was finally able to reap the rewards of my miles of uphill hiking on a subsequent hunt. Here is Max bringing back the bird:

Ron’s Fishing Tips and Stories: Winter Bass Fishing in Mexico and Brazil
Posted on April 20th, 2009 No commentsOpening Comments
It’s wintertime here in the states and I just hate cold weather unless I am sitting in a warm deer blind or a heated duck blind. You certainly won’t find me on the water this time of the year. That cold north wind just makes it miserable to be outside. However, it’s a great time to be in western Mexico with highs in the 80’s and lows usually in the upper 50’s with very little wind. That’s as close to paradise as it gets for a bass fisherman. One great fishing trip a year to Mexico gives you something to look forward to and you don’t get that feeling that you are missing out on something great.
This lake has been red hot since we opened last fall. Bass are being caught in all depths on a wide variety of lures ranging from top waters to Storm swimbaits. Also producing good numbers of fish are the blue-chrome rattletraps and–as always–the watermelon lizard rigged Carolina style. This bait works in all bass lakes in all countries. It is always a sure bet when all other baits fail.
The numbers of fish are running from 50 bass per boat each day up to 80 fish a day with good quality fish. It’s all the action you would hope to have on a trip. Tons of fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Our beautiful little camp just gets prettier every year as we continue to plant more flowers and shrubs. Remember, we have the only camp at water’s edge–it’s 1 minute from your bed to your boat. Our guides are local men who have been with us since we opened the camp in 1994.
Come on down and enjoy this tropical paradise.
We opened Comedero back in November and then we got a big rise from rains in the mountains. The lake went up to 110% and the first 2 weeks were very slow. However, now the level is stable and the whole lake has turned to fish. The numbers are running from 60 to 110 bass per day per boat with some good catches coming on top water. Other baits producing good for us are white spinners, citrus colored cranks, and as always the watermelon colored lizard.
Omar is running an excellent camp with great food and great service. There is a new road from the camp down to the water with a private sombra for noon lunches.
Of course we have the very best bass boats in Mexico (Express boats), equipped with steering wheels and all the comforts you would expect to find in an American-made boat.
The fishing is fantastic, so get out of this cold weather and go have some fun in the warm climate of Mexico.
Last fall we ran only like 3 trips due to the economy scare but those trips produced some fantastic fishing. The area we fished is restricted: it takes a permit to fish in this special place. I guess the word spread as we are booked full for this next fall. I am sure we may have a cancellation or two between now and next fall so you might call the office from time to time.
We are now in our winter season fishing the flooded Negro river out of Barcellos. WE ARE THE ONLY OUTFITTER RUNNING TRIPS THIS WINTER. All our competition canceled their trips due to slow fishing which was about 100 fish total for a week. ALL OUR TRIPS SO FAR HAVE AVERAGED OVER 700 FISH AND LOTS OF BIG FISH.
Jimmy Houston shot a TV show with us last week and Jimmy had a 21 lb a 22 lb, and a 24 lb peacock by a lady in Jimmy’s group; so you might watch Jimmy’s show when he airs the Brazil show as this will be a great fishing show.
Once again, let me remind you that the houseboat we use is the largest and finest in all the Amazon. I recommend you get a spot for next season before they are all filled.
Closing Comments
Over the past 37 years in this fishing business we have gone through several economic recessions. Some people stayed home fearful of the downturn. Many clients chose to go ahead with their lives and didn’t miss their once-a-year fishing trip. We all know the economy will get much better and we all know it’s only a question of time. This season in both Mexico and Brazil we have been truly blessed with good business. In fact, we are going to have more business this season than we had the season before. That’s FANTASTIC and we are truly gratefully to all our loyal clients. Just remember each year you miss is one you can’t ever get back no matter what happens, so make your plans to book your trip and take a buddy. You will have lots of fun and make some precious memories.
And remember, if you are too busy to go fishing then MISTER YOU ARE TOO DARN BUSY.
Don’t let winter ruin your fishing. Check out all our WARM destinations.
